It’s undeniable that the one thing you need to succeed in your online business is traffic. And nothing beats free traffic. Where does free traffic come from? Google and other search engines.
How do we get free traffic from Google?
This is something you’ve experienced first hand countless times. You load up Google or another search engine. Enter the words you’re interested in. And then you visit one or more of the sites that show up. That website owner has just enjoyed the benefit of free traffic. What need to figure out is how to get you free traffic.
If you’re like most people you only click links on the first page or two. The truth is that this first page of results receives nearly all the clicks. And what’s more, the first 3 get over 70% of the clicks.
So to get any significant amount of free traffic from Google, you really need to be on the first page. To do that, you need to be “ranked” in Google’s Top 10 results. And this bring us to…
What is search engine optimization?
Search Engine Optimization is a measure of how well Google and other search engines think your website matches the search terms people are typing into their search boxes. It’s a complex formula that only people working for Google know exactly. But there are several things that we know for sure.
First, before you can get ranked highly, Google has to know you exist. This is called getting “indexed.” When your website gets indexed, Google stores information about it in their massive database.
In order to get indexed, Google has to be able to find you. And the best way for Google to find you is to get inbound links from other sites. Google will actually follow the links on sites it already has indexed to find new sites and index them.
A couple of great places to do this are in your Twitter or Facebook profiles. These sites are very popular so Google indexes them multiple times a day. And follows new links it finds immediately.
After getting indexed, you need to work on your search engine ranking. Due to the massive size of the Google database – literally billions of pages – just getting indexed doesn’t do much for you.
The 3 factors in getting ranked:
This is the SEO you do on your site itself. And it means that the content on your page matches the keywords you’re targeting. Clearly this article is about search engine optimization. One reason Google knows this is because the words search engine optimization appear inside it. And another way this is determined is by the other related phrases like traffic generation that are also in the article.
You also need to make sure the title tags, outbound links and the domain itself match the topic of the page. Google uses all of this content to figure out what your site is really about.
The second factor is your linking. The links coming in and the links going out are included in this. You want to make sure you have more inbound links than outbound links. And the more inbound links the better.
One great way to get lots of inbound links is through web 2.0 sites. With this strategy what you do is write an article about the topic you’re targeting. Then create a bunch of different versions of it. And then upload a different versions to a bunch of sites that allow you to add content. And the more you do the better.
The last thing we know for sure is that Google likes to see active sites. A page that was created 3 years ago and hasn’t been touched since won’t rank well. Google expects you to be updating your site regularly. RSS feeds are an easy way to keep your content changing.
But the best way is with active discussions on your page itself. To get comments from others, you need to get others to visit your site. Online forums are simple source of real live visitors.
Set up forum profiles with the ones related to your website. Then become active in the forum. Then put a link to your site in your profile. This will get your more inbound links. And it gets people to visit the site you link to.
It’s important that you do everything listed here. Unfortunately, rewriting your articles again and again. Setting up tons of profiles on forums. And posting your articles and comments takes a lot of time. And you’re already too busy, so you mostly likely will never do any of it.
However, rank builder software exists. And it automates everything we’ve just talked about. So the best thing you can do is to automate this process. And then you’re sure to get it done. And not doing it means you will never get free traffic from Google.
