you guys can use the media impressions converter the camera comes with, tats what i do and i get the video and sound, the only problem is is that it strips the video of its original quality, and then when you render it in vegas, it’s stripped again. I’m so frusterated because I got some great really sharp abd HD video but then it becomes dull and sometimes even pixelated when there is a lot of movement. SAD.

The fix is simple, just rename the file from .mov to .mp4 and hey presto it works.
No downloading, or installing any software.

This method does not work for us (seems to, but audio is out of sync on render), so we've had to resort to converting all the .mov files to .avi files (using Prism) before editing in Vegas. I'm sure we're losing quality in this process, and we're DEFINTELY losing time. Very frustrating.

I've heard that Vegas Pro doesn't have the issue since they released a patch, but no patch for Movie Maker. Can anyone confirm this? Does the patch do anything besides add the new dll? I just noticed that Sony Vegas 10 is out, does that display the same issue?

If anyone has found a solution, please post an update here.

I'm beyond frustrated. I've had the Zi8 for 6 months now and can't figure out how to edit videos from it on my PC. Vegas does NOT accept mov files on my computer, and that's what the Zi8 puts out. No file converter works as the CODEC seems to be mysteriously incompatible with this earth.

Absolutely great article man. I was searching google for a solution to the Sony Vegas mov question you address… not just for the Zi8 but for other cameras with the same video format issue as well.
