How to Make Twitter Search Results Show up in Google Search

April 4th, 2009

If Google is know as the "Best" search engine user experience, one they are are lacking in is how fast they can spider new content as it happens. I’ve seen Google come to this blog and others I have and spider content in 15 minutes or less, but WE WANT FASTER right?

What makes Twitter even better is that it is truely a real time human searcn engine, usergenerated and able to post answer to searches people are doing and things they are using NOW.

I wanted to see how I could integrate the twitter search feed into my google searches and I found a nice little way to do it so I can now get real time twitter feeds on what my topic of choice is.

Here is a screen shot for how it looks integrated into my search results.

Portable Speaker Search

Not sure if the pic is big enough… but you can see how Twitter Results show up at the top with some results on "Portable Speakers" which I did a search for.

Now, how did I "hack the system" to get these results integrated?

Since I use Firefox now for all my browsing, some smart person created a little doohickie that allows me to pull the feed in. I don’t know how it’s done, all I know is I needed to push a few buttons and it was done for me.

(sorry I am not a techie!)

Mark Carey came up with a simple solution using Firefox and greasemonkey that will change the way you use and interact with Google.

His Add-on allows for 5 of the most recent results to show up at the top of the search area.

Called "Realtime Twitter Search Results on Google," the service is actually a Greasemonkey script. Don’t be intimidated: Carey explains on his blog how anyone running Firefox can add the script to their browser with less than 5 clicks of the mouse. (See our short video on learning how to use Greasemonkey in under 5 minutes, too.)

Carey’s script delivers real-time search results to Google – just like people have asked for! Thanks Mark! You can follow Mark on Twitter at @mthacks, you can follow me at @goldmills.
