The Internet is Reversing: Return of the Social Media

(1) Comments So Far... What do you think? January 22, 2008

As a successful online marketer, I am always studying other marketers and trends to see how to best service my customers and gain new ones with innovation. We live with an ever changing internet that has gone through many facelifts over it’s 20 or so year history.

Let’s go back in time….

See, back in the 1980’s, when we all used Apple IIe’s and Comodore 64’s the internet was a Bulletin Board System or BBS, where people dialed in on a dial-up modem… 300 baud, 900 baud even 1200 baud (rich kids) and all we did was chat. We interacted, we talked, we shared games (warez) and we connected from many spots locally as well as nationally in chat rooms.

Then in the 1990’s when AOL birthed their vision of an internet, it was segmented into many catagories for people to hang out in and network, socialize and connect. And if you wanted to surf the web with the “web crawler” you could go there, but there was not ‘much’ out there yet.

In the late 1990’s it was all about the HOMEPAGE. Yep, everyone wanted to build themselves a website, go out and try to sell something. Everyone wanted a peice of internet real estate out there and went buying up domain names and getting into position for an economic boom that was about to generate billions of dollars in online revenues, not for the ISP’s who seemed to control everything up to that point, but for the start up Internet Infopreneurs who saw the landscape of the Wild Wild West and it was ripe for the taking.

eBay evolved into probably the first big social network, where people all over the world bartered for goods. People could leave feedback, make comments and trade at prices that were well below wholesale.

Playstations and Xboxes also put people together in virtual worlds to fight together or wage war against one another and people would spend hours upon hours leveling up characters and doing dungeon raids all for virtual booty, that gained bragging rights for the day.

We went through a few Dot Com Busts, and Dot Com Booms over the last 10-15 years and I see the internet now as reversing itself. It is all about the social media and social networking now, more than ever.

Products are cropping up faster and faster about how to tap into traffic from these Web2.0 type sites.

People are not so much yearning for new information as much as they are yearning for new and more relationships. Dating websites are extremely popular. Talk about a membership site model that is monetizing the masses at $20-$30 a month with subscriber bases of hundred of thousands! People are willing to pay this money for one reason and one reason only…. TO MAKE A REAL CONNECTION…. TO FIND TRUE LOVE… TO FIND TRUE RELATIONSHIPS.

Now, these sites and social networking and media is not new to us, it’s been around for 5 years or so, but more people are coming to the internet to come back to the roots we had back in the 80’s.

They are coming here to connect. They are looking for relationships, friendships, and interaction with others. And social media sites, helps foster the dynamic of a group or pod of people united around a common interest or service.

People are voting on Digg. People are joking on Fark. People are sharing leads on Linkedin. Adults are sending friend requests on Myspace and it’s more popular now with OLDER people than the younger people as they discovered new business could be found on sites that are more popular now than GOOGLE!

Video is all the rage, as people love watching people, then interacting with them with media that is “social”.

It seems like everyday, a new social media/networking/bookmarking/voting site comes out with its “unique” play on the game.

Why?

They want to build sites with deep roots in relationship building and connecting. PLUS… They want a super sticky site where they can create demographics which can attract the big dollars of advertisers.

Yes, you can still slap an adsense box, text link or advertising banner on a blog or site and make money in that realm too… The banners are NOT dead folks, people are still clicking on ads, like they always have.

That’s right, look at Facebook. Extremely popular now. It’s trying to get into the advertising game. What was just a school kids networking site is now even involved in the political debates. Is growing so fast, its more popular than Google.

The advertisers are looking to get in there and tap that market for product sales and build brand images.

But all this comes back to what it is that humans really deep down want to feel and that is to feel loved, liked and connected.

It’s not about the solo website anymore.

Don’t sit there and think you gotta build a website and a website will be your savior. It’s about building communities and connections. It’s still about people, cause people buy from other people, not just cold corporate websites. People buy from people that they know, like and trust.

Remember that.

Another cool phenomenon is the MeetUp. Sites like Meetup.com are taking people OFFLINE to build bridges and connections FACE TO FACE! Wow, imagine that. I am using meetup right now to make tons of new connections as well as new business. It’s working like a champ. I’ll have more to say about that later…

Remember we are still a BBS world. We can translate languages instantly on the fly with a push of a button, we can reach out and find new customers, new dates, new friends, and new spouses at the flip of a few keys.

Folks, the internet is reversing, and it’s fine by me, as we’ll continue to grow into communities of connected people where all kinds of business and relationships take place.

Go to this space. Help make it better and you’ll see your business and personal relationships grow and flourish into new heights.

What are your thoughts about all this web2.0 stuff and social networking?

Review of Armand Morin’s Internet Marketing Explained

(0) Comments So Far... What do you think? January 18, 2008

Armand Morin is one of my online marketing mentors. Having generated over $45 million dollars online over the last 11 years, Armand Morin and his Generator software have made it big on the internet.

Armand is a totally dedicated internet marketer who spends countless hours testing, tracking, and tweaking things until he is satisfied the end product will wow people.

I have been “wowed” many times by Armand in the casual conversations we have shared over meals, or just hanging out at internet marketing conferences and talking about how internet marketing needs to work.

Recently, I got a copy of Internet Marketing Explained, which Armand published in 2005. And now he is promoting his new Internet Marketing Explained program with much more content, as so much has changed on the internet over the last two years, a new version needed to be made.

This new version is a comprehensive model of content upon content and hours upon hours of audio and video training teaching and showing people how Armand Morin would market products and services over the internet.

If $45 millions dollars isn’t enough of a reason to get the home study course, then I don’t know what will motivate you more.

Go claim one of the copies of the Internet Marketing Explained Home Study Course before they run out or increase the price.

What happened when the world ‘elfed’ themselves with Viral Marketing

(1) Comments So Far... What do you think? January 11, 2008

For the past two years, Office Max tried an experiment on viral marketing by allowing people to create little dancing elves with their favorite photos in there and watch the elf dance to jingle bells. Unless you have been hiding in a cave, you probably made an elf or 10 right?

Did you elf yourself? I elfed my daugher, Izzy last year… here is the photo:

Elf Yourself with Office MaxSo, I was sitting at Panera the other day and I read this full page ad they had placed in the USA Today, which shows you how a good viral buzz campaign can work for a company.

Now what is sad is this site got so much traffic over the holidays and now that Santa has packed up, he took his Elves with him and the site is no longer “elfing” people. Why not put an optin form there Office Max? You are wasting you traffic and not capturing the visitors… duh!

Here is what they said in the ad.

“we would like to publically apologize for the recent drop in global productivity. Again, it was all caused by the re-launch of our www.elfyourself.com site.

We had no idea that this year over 123 million elves would be created (more than the populations of Canada, France, Sweden and New York City combined) in just 8 weeks.

And we never imagined that people would choose to spend over 2600 combined years making them - that’s enough time to date back to the 6th centrury B.C. and the Neo-Babylonian Empire.

So basically, a whole lot of people chose to create a whole lot of frolicking elves in tights instead of working on a whole bunch of other stuff. (oops…our bad!)”

Wow, so let’s do the #’s there again…

8 weeks = 123 Million people participated for free. After each time someone created an elf, they could MAIL IT (tell a friend generator type deal) to anyone and invite them to make an elf. THEN, after all that was done, guess where you ended up… seeing what Office Max’s special offers were on their website.

Do you think they might have sold a thing or two to some of those 123 million people? How about a HUGE email database to market back to? Maybe…

But they don’t talk about how much they sold or how much they made off this viral campaign. So maybe it was not as hot as they liked or mum’s the word at corporate.

Regardless, how much would it cost you or a starving programer to outsource a project like this that is fun, happy, viral and also gets your brand name exposed in the process?

If you can figure out a great gimmick like Orbitz.com did with Bash the Boss, then, you could have a serious hit on your hands. By the way… did you know national bass the boss day is coming up soon? See my earlier press release for that…. National Bass the Boss Day.

Look how much time the world spent on making elves… 2600 combined years, which is staggaring.. What if we united under some other cause or charity and put 2600 combined years effort into that? Wouldn’t that have a huge effect on something?

Well, lessons learned. Discover if there is a way to create a game, a tell-a-friend generator so massive people tell massive people about you or your deal.. and you could be well on your way with a great viral buzz campaign that takes off like crazy like Elf Yourself did.

Have You Googled You? How Popular are You? Check with Popuri

(0) Comments So Far... What do you think? January 6, 2008

So, you are kinda bored, not much happening online, got a free moment?

Have you ever peeked at what the media and others are saying about…. YOU?

Ever google your name to see where you sites rank and how you fit into the whole game?

When I google my name on Google, I come up a couple times on page 1. That’s good, that’s where I want to be and where you want to be as well.

But, when I google me on Yahoo… (can you google someone on Yahoo?) I don’t show up until page 3… interesting… (they seem to love the other Jeff Mills)

And when I google me on MSN, I show up all over page 1, whew.. Wassup Yahoo? Looks like Yahoo has many links to my Hip Hop Namesake the Jeff Mills from Detriot. He gets lots of press, which I am sure I get some of his traffic and he gets some of mine. I also get an occassional email meant for him, which can be kinda interesting there too! :) (I always send them back to the originator to let them know wrong person)

Well, there is a free service out there called POPURI which means being a voyeur of yourself and an egomaniac just got easier. Now you can know how popular you are and get some interesting stats to boot!

Popuri will show you how you rank in these areas, which is awesome:

Google PageRank:

Alexa Rank:

Compete Rank:

Quantcast Rank:

del.icio.us Bookmarks:

Bloglines subscribers:

WHOIS:

DNS Report:

Another thing to realize too, it there is full disclosure, you’ll see the good bad and ugly of where your domain names rank on many networks and how many backlinks you have (or your competition has). You’ll see where you fit in on Technorati and Delicious. Plus, if you want to be a spy or stalker (don’t be) then you can do a who is look up and if the person who is owning the domain registered it in their name, you’ll know how to reach them, call them or email them right there. (You can get a privacy thing on your domains if you don’t want this public). So far I have never been one to hide my details off the internet because I do business with people and if they cannot call me or get in touch with me, how can I help them?

So, anyways, you can learn more and test out the Popuri service all for free, it’s fun and you’ll learn some things about your sites and the competition’s sites. It will help you figure out strategy and how to increase your reach higher and get your namesake even bigger on the net so you can one day become the king of the world.

And if you want to use it on your business domain names, go for it too, as that is what it was probably originally meant for. You can even add a widget to your blog or website which shows everyone how popular you really are. That can scare them away or really make them think you are someone they need to get to know and many…. BUY FROM…!
